Mysterious floating tourbillon
Cartier master watchmakers use a sapphire crystal disc that has been treated with anti glare, and dig a hole in it that is the same size as the tourbillon, perfectly creating the illusion of the tourbillon frame hanging in the air. To achieve this illusion, they put the disk of the support frame in a rotating state, and then placed the minute wheel that drives the oscillator on the shaft, which is used to limit the internal “resistance torque” of the mechanical device supporting the tourbillon, thus successfully transmitting power to the tourbillon and enabling the entire device to complete a suspended rotation every minute. Therefore, while the tourbillon completes one rotation every minute in a transparent open space, its frame undergoes one complete rotation. The secret to achieving this result is to set up a set of gear tracks around the edge of the sapphire crystal disk, connecting the disk to a large gear that runs once every minute.
This “magic watch” is equipped with a refined manual winding mechanical movement developed by independent watchmakers, which is the result of long-term research and development by watchmakers. For example, determining the rotational speed of each moving component requires countless calculations. To minimize energy consumption, the tourbillon frame completes a complete rotation in its specific space every minute. To improve the efficiency of this mobile device, the weight of each component of the movement is minimized, thereby better controlling the inertia of the rotating components including the disc and titanium tourbillon frame inside. Although the weight of the “suspended” frame has been reduced to a minimum (028 grams), in order to compensate for the weight of the speed control mechanism and the frame, a portion of the circular frame used for meshing gears is made of K-gold material and installed in a position opposite to the tourbillon, ensuring equal weight on both sides and creating a dynamic balance effect.
